“Period” Week end at the National Military Museum

The sixth edition of the “Days of the National Military Museum” will occur Saturday May 13 and Sunday May 14, 2006 between 10.00 and 14.00 hours.

This year, the activities are dedicated to conjuring the Romanian armed forces in time of King Carol I (1866-1914) for the public to find out the equipment and endowment of the Romanian soldiers and the military daily life in that time.

A “micii dorobanti” detachment of children between 6 and 12 years old and the group of reconstitution of the 6th Dorobanti Regiment “Mihai Viteazul”, all dressed in “curcani” from 1877 will present the combat training exercises. They will fire with old armaments, including a bronze gun “Armstrong” type, model 1883.

The young people will have the possibility to fire with compressed air guns and the children to participate in a competition of drawings on military and history issues. A balloon set at disposal by the National Institute of Aerospatial Researches will fly over the Museum’s yard.

The exhibition “Carol I and the Romanian armed forces, 1868-1914” will show the equipment and the armament used in the last decades of the 19th century, the gun used as catafalque during the funerals of King Carol I, an old photo cabinet and the royal family’s coaches.

The visitors can watch documentary films on the Romanian air force, the fair of collectors of “Militaria” and can enjoy “ the military portions of food” cooked in a campaign kitchen.

A military band dressed in 1877 uniforms will play marches, promenade music, waltzes and tunes in vogue at the beginning of the 20th century.

The access of the public is free during the “Days of the National Military Museum”.
