The visit in France made by a military delegation headed by General Dr. Mihail Popescu started Tuesday, March 9, 04 with a military ceremony organized at General Staff of the French Armies headquarters in Paris followed by official talks with the French counterpart Army General Henri Bentegeat.

During the talks, General Popescu presented the aspects of the process of reform within the Romanian Armed Forces and the participation of the Romanian soldiers to the international missions and thanked General Bentegeat for the French support for Romania in joining NATO.

The talks also were on the professionalization of the two Armed Forces. The French partners presented how their Armed Forces professionalization have been made after 1996 when France abolished the compulsory military service.

The professionalization started in 1997 and it is still going on, thus: 1997-2002 there were a series of changes in structure and started to enlist professionalized military; the second stage is the stage of professionalization, strengthening of structures planned to be ended by 2008. The process, according to the French estimations, represents more then E 570 millions, meaning 4% increase in the defence expenditures.

In the second day thedelegation visited important French units in Landivisiau and Brest. Members of the Romanian delegation Lieutenant General Gheorghe Catrina, chief of Air Staff and Counter Admiral Gheorghe Marin, director of the General Staff were shown the modernized planes Super Etendadrd and Rafale at airnaval base in Landivisiau and visited the air maintenance service. In Brest they visited frigate Tourville and Andromede type mine sweepers from the force of naval action.

The visit of the Romanian officials will continue Thursday with official meetings at the French Ministry of Defence.
