Joint Press Release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of National Defence on the Missile Defense System Based in Romania
The Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of National Defence inform that following yesterday`s meetings with the American side that took place before the US Defense Secretary’s announcement on increased missile defense operations to prepare for possible missile attacks, the following emerged:
Phase II of the US Missile Defense System based at Deveselu Base, Romania continues as established.
The operation will unfold according to the schedule agreed with the American partner, and it is intended to become operational sometime in 2015, as initially established.
Phase IV of the defense system (the Standard Missile 3 IIB the US Secretary of Defense referred to) was never projected to be placed at Deveselu Base, where Standard Missile 3 IB will be located.
Therefore, the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of National Defence point out that the missile defense system, Standard Missile 3 IB, to be implemented in Romania will become operational with no delays, according to the schedule agreed upon with the American partner, the US budget allotted to it exists, whereas yesterday`s announcement of the US Secretary of Defense has no bearing on the process in Romania
