The ceremony of reception of the first antiaircraft division equipped with GEPARD system will be organized Wednesday, November 3, 04 at the 3rd Antiaircraft Artillery Division in Turda, in the presence of Ioan Mircea Pascu, minister of National Defence and General Dr. Eugen Badalan, chief of Romanian General Staff.
Participants to this activity are the representatives of the Federal Ministry of Defence of Germany, officials of the local administration and the representatives of Krauss Maffei Wegmann producing the GEPARD system. GEPARD division is the first unit totally integrated with equipment totally compatible with NATO ones and applying the Alliance’s specific logistic proceedings.
GERARD is an armored, autonomous, self-propelled artillery system performing missions in any meteorological conditions, day and night. The system is intended to fight against aircraft and helicopters surprisingly attacking at law altitude. Due to its high mobility and the very short time of reaction, this system can ensure the protections of the armored units in the battlefield. The crew is formed by three persons. The system has two 35 mm OERLIKON guns, automatically feel, 3,500 m firing range and two barrels with 1,100 fires/minute.
It is a modular construction and has radar systems performing search from movement and it is equipped with a computerized system of firing.
GEPARD system is based on a cooperation agreement signed in 1998 between the Romanian Ministry of National Defence and the German Federal Ministry of Defence setting free of pay at disposal for the Romanian Armed Forces this system of artillery, a part of logistic infrastructure and the training of 25 Romanian militaries and a concept study on logistic integration.
The equipment and the logistic infrastructure were made according to a contract with Krauss Maffei Wegmann the producer of GEPARD system in worth of EURO 25 millions. The system was tested with very good results in September 04 in Capu Midia firingfield.
