A Romanian delegation headed by General Dr. Eugen Badalan, Chief of General Staff, participates in the NATO Political Committee meeting, which started at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, today.
General Badalan met with Admiral Edmund P. Gianbastiani, head of the Allied Command Transformation (ACT), and with General Jesper Helso, Chief of Defence of Denmark. During the talks with the two high officials, topics regarding Romanian military transformation and concrete ways in which it could benefit from the ACT and Danish expertise in the field.
The sessions of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership (EAPC), NATO-Russia and NATO-Ukraine were held at chiefs of defence level during the first day, as well as a meeting of the Military Committee with military representatives of the Mediterranean Dialogue (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia).
The EAPC session highlighted the need to develop interoperability with the partners, as a crucial requirement for their efficient participation in common operations together with the Alliance. NATO memrs restated their commitment to help with assistance programmes regarding the military reforms in the Partner countries.
The agendas of the NATO-Russia and NATO-Ukraine Councils included issues of military reform, working programmes for 2005, and joint participation in crisis management. The NATO Military Committee’s meeting with official representatives of the Mediterranean Dialogue member states addressed topics on common ways to fight terrorism, as well as the need to design the shape of military cooperation between NATO and these nations.
