The school ship “Mircea” will participate between June 9 and September 20, 2005 in a training mission in Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean and North Sea.
“Mircea” will participate in many maritime international festivities and jubilee events in Belgium, United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, Holland and will stop in ports in Italy, Portugal, Spain and Tunis. In the North Sea it will participate in the “Tall Ships Race 2005”.
The crew consists of 160 persons, among them being 19 students of “Mircea cel Batran” Navy Academy and 49 students from the Navy Foremen School. For the first time, in a nine months mission, there are nine female students and pupils as part of the crew. The ship departure ceremony will occur Thursday, June 9 at 11.15 hours in the military berth at Constanta port.
Built in 1938-39 in Blohm&Voss shipyard, Hamburg, Germany the school ship “Mircea” represents the symbol of the Romanian naval tradition on which almost all the generations of military officers and foremen were trained.
In 1976 the ship participated in the US Independence Bicentennial. Last year “Mircea” crossed the Atlantic Ocean for the second time and took part in the “Tall Ships Challenge 2004” reaching the second place in one of the stages and the fifth place in the overall.
