GENERAL MEDAR IS THE NEW DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE GENERAL DIRECTORATE FOR MILITARY INTELLIGENCE


As of October 3, 2005, by decision of the Prime Minister of the Government of Romania, upon proposal of the Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Eng. Sergiu-Tudor Medar was appointed, as Director General of the General Directorate for Military Intelligence.

Since 1999 until his appointment in this new position, Lieutenant-General Medar was the chief of the Military Intelligence Directorate in the General Directorate for Military Intelligence.

Born on January 1, 1948 in Târgu Jiu, Gorj County, Lt Gen Medar graduated from the Polytechnic Institute in Bucharest in 1970. In 1986, he got his doctor’s degree and was commissioned in the rank of captain and started to work for the Institute for Scientific Research and Technology.

During 1990-1992, he worked in the Military Intelligence Directorate and attended the postgraduate course for military intelligence. In 1992 he was appointed deputy of the defence attaché of Romania to the United State of America, the Republic of Argentina and the Federative Republic of Brazil. In 1996 he was promoted as defence attaché of Romania to the USA. He is married and has a 30 year old daughter.

Lt Gen Medar follows in this position Lt Gen Gheorghe Rotaru, who was promoted to the rank of four star general and was relegated to reserve in the new rank.

General Rotaru was the Director General of the General Directorate for Military Intelligence since July 15 1999. From 1996 to 1998 he was chief of the Office for Military Liaison with NATO HQ. During 1998 and 1999 he was assigned as the military representative of Romania to NATO HQ.
