Military of the Romanian Air Force taking command of the Kabul International Airport

The first military of the Romanian Air Force taking command in April 1, of the Kabul International Airport (KAIA) are leaving tonight for Afghanistan from the 90th Air Transport Base on a C 130 Hercules.

39 soldiers will take over from the Greek contingent the Afghani Airport leadership, being appointed in the Airport administration and command structures. The Romanian Detachment will act within ISAF under NATO operational command.

The main missions the Romanians will fulfill in their four months mission will be the airport management, daily coordination of air operations, control of takes-off and landings and air traffic control. Also, the Romanians will analyze the weather forecast for safety flights and will maintain the communication systems in operational parameters and will ensure the logistic support of operations on this Airport.

The Romanian second echelon will leave for Afghanistan Sunday, March 26, 2006.
