The military doctors celebrate on August 21, the 144 years since the establishment of the Armed Forces Medical Corps. This occasion, they will lay wreaths and flowers at the Monumentul Eroilor Sanitari ( Monument of the Sanitary Heroes) in Piata Eroilor, at 09.30 hours and at the grave of the founder of the Military Medicine, Doctor Carol Davilla.


The Armed Forces Medical Corps and the General Directorate of the Romanian Medical Service was establish in August 21, 1862 by the High Decree of the King. It was a specialized organism for the preservation of health of the Romanian Armed Forces.

Ever since the beginning, the Military Medicine benefited the professionalism and special qualities of the Division General Doctor Carol Davila, the General Inspector of the Armed Forces Medical Service, Director of the School of Medicine ( the founder of the medical military high education in our country) and Inspector of the Medical Central Administration and Hospitals.

The normative frame of function of the military medical service led by a specialized directorate of the Ministry of War was ensured by the elaboration of the Instructions of Function of Ambulances and the Decision on the Ambulances in the Armed Forces and the promulgation by the High Decree no. 1125/April 15, 1882 of the Law for Organization of the Medical Service in the Army.

The military doctors became in time the well known personalities, home and abroad.

Now, there are 21 military medical institutions, such as the MoD Medical Directorate, Medical and Pharmaceutical Centers, a Center of Research, a Military Medical Institute and 12 emergency Military Hospitals in Brasov, Bucharest, Cluj Napoca, Constanta, Craiova, Focsani, Galati, Iasi, Oradea, Pitesti, Sibiu and Timisoara.
