Regina Maria in mission on the Mediterranean Sea

Regina Maria frigate will participate between September and November 2006 in Active Endeavour NATO operation on the Mediterranean Sea. Commanded by Commander Costel Tataru, initially the ship will train in common with the Turkish Navy's ships for this mission.

This is the Romanian Navy second participation in the Active Endeavour operation; firstly, Regele Ferdinand was the frigate that participated for two months in the operation, last autumn.

A ceremony occasioned by the Regina Maria departure for mission will occur Thursday, August 31, 2006 at 10 a.m. in Constanta Military Bay. The guests will be the representatives of the Ministry of Defense, the local and central authorities, different NGOs and the relatives of the crew.


Active Endeavour operation was initiated by NATO in October 18, 2001 for disheartening and unsettling the terrorist actions. The NATO military conception on the defense against terrorism foresee the specific actions. In this respect, the Active Endeavour force performs the actions of survey and control on the great navigation passages in the Mediterranean Sea.

The main characteristic of the Regina Maria frigate are: crew-203; displacement-4,900tdw; long-148.2m; width- 14.75m; max.speed-30 knots; max. draught-4.6m; seven decks, autonomy-4,500miles. Equipment: 76mm Otto Melara gun, torpedo installations, computer assisted system of command; TERMA passive jamming installations; electronic warfare systems; nine radar systems. Propulsion: four Rolls-Royce turbines; four Diesel generators of 1 MW and air conditioned installation; depot and refrigeration conditions for 90 days of navigation.
