The Romanian Company in Basra replaced by their colleagues

The Romanian Infantry Company acting within the UNAMI was replaced today, in Basra, Iraq. Commanded by Lieutenant Dan George Marinescu the 100 military from the 21st Mountain Battalion replaced their colleagues from the same unit, in mission since March 2006.

Representatives of the 2nd Joint Operational Command Maresal Alexandru Averescu from Buzau, British and US officers from the Multinational Division South-East and the members of the UN mission participated in the ceremony occurred in Basra.

The Company conducts the mission of guard of the UNAMI HQ, organizes the check points of traffic of persons and cars and the escort of the UN staff.
The first Romanian sub-unit for the UNAMI support was introduced in the theater of operations in Iraq in April 2005, at the UN and the United States request and it was subordinated to the Multinational Division South East. In the last two years the Romanian sub-unit was manned with military from the 26th Infantry Battalion Neagoe Basarab from Craiova, the 33rd Mountain Battalion from Curtea de Arges and the 21st Mountain Battalion.
