Military divers three decades of activity


The military divers' demonstrative exercises and a military and religious ceremony will occur Friday, September 29, 2006 starting 14.00 hours in Constanta military Bay, occasioned by the Day of the Romanian Diver and the celebration of three decades since the establishment of the 39th Center of Divers.

The first Romanian divers have been recognized between 1978 and 1980 as specialists in the use of the diving and hyperbar equipment. After that, benefiting of the French technology the 39th Center of Divers established the activity of divers of deep intervention and work. Along the time, the divers performed daring missions, most of them for the first time at national level, such as the investigation of the underwater continental plate, intervention in affected areas, home and abroad, works of installation of maritime platforms, mount of underwater pipes, special assistance during the construction of the reactor no. 1 at Cernavoda.

The professionalism of the combat divers was appreciated during their participation in more then 20 NATO/PfP exercises and about 90 real diving in cooperation with the military divers from the United States, France, Belgium, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Georgia, Poland, Denmark. The most recent confirmation of their value was in June 2006 when a group of de-mining divers participated in the STEADFFAST JAGUAR 06 NATO exercise in the territorial waters of the Islands of the Green Cap. This occasion, the Romanian divers have been tested and certified for the participation within NATO Response Force (NRF-7), and their activity have been appreciated by the General Secretary of the North Atlantic Alliance , Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who stated that the participation of the Romanian troops in this exercise is a sign that Romania is a trusted and reliable ally of NATO.
