MILITARY AWARD FOR THE EAGLES

The Special Operations Battalion, The Eagles, were offered a military award consisting in the Colors of their Unit, today, October 17, according to the Presidential Decree no. 1011 issued last July.

Traian Basescu, the Romanian President handed over the Unit Colors to colonel Constantin Stiop, the battalion commander, during a ceremony organized in Targu Mures, attended by Corneliu Dobritoiu, State Secretary for Defense Policy and Planning, Vice admiral Ph.D. Gheorghe Marin, Chief, General Staff, and General-lieutenant Ioan Sorin, chief, Army Staff.

President Basescu also offered the Faithful Service medal first class to Sergeant Laurentiu Serban, in recognition to his outstanding devotion in mission. Sergeant Serban was wounded last April during a patrolling and monitoring mission in Afghanistan.

The Eagles is a Romanian Army unit, trained and equipped for special missions such as: reconnaissance, counter terrorism, military assistance in training other armed forces, stabilizing actions, humanitarian assistance and peace support operations.

This Battalion took part in international missions in 2005-2006, in Afghanistan, during ENDURING FREEDOM and ISAF (patrol, escort and guard missions) and ANA TRAINING (council and training the structures of the new Afghan armed forces) operations.
