Minister of Defense and Chief of the General Staff in Kandahar

Minister of Defense, Sorin Fruzaverde and Chief of the General Staff, Admiral Gheorghe Marin visited Wednesday, December 13, the Kandahar Air Base in Afghanistan where 200 Romanian military are deployed.

We had the pleasure to hear again that nothing wrong can be said about our military, on the contrary, we heard only words of praise stated the Minister of Defense after his meeting with General Ton Van Loon, the commander of the ISAF Command, South.

The Romanian delegation met the military from the Guard Infantry Company of Kandahar Air Base, the sub-unit of the 26th Infantry Battalion Neagoe Basarab, also known as the Red Scorpions.

In the name of the President of Romania, the Minister of Defense offered the Military Virtue Order in rank of officer with signs of war to the commander of the Romanian Detachment in Kandahar, Captain Marius Bumbac.

Red Scorpions gained a rich experience in the missions fulfilled in operations in Angola (1996), Afghanistan (2002, 2005, 2006), Kosovo (2002) and Iraq ( 2004, 2005). During the present operation in Afghanistan, the Company of the 26th Infantry Battalion is fulfilling the mission of guard for the security of Kandahar Air Base, the mission of illumination together with the heavy infantry armament sub-unit and the mission of rapid intervention for the security of the areas of impact.
