Romanian Detachment, participant in Basra mission, at the end of mandate

The Mountain Sub-unit return ceremony occurred May 8, in Predeal, in the presence of the State Secretary Corneliu Dobritoiu, chief of Department for Policy of Defence and Planning; the Sub-unit participated in the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq – UNAMI IV.

In this activity also participated the Deputy Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant General Sorin Ioan, the Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General Teodor Frunzeti and the commander of the 2nd Joint Operational Command, Lieutenant General Florian Pinta.

At the solemn call were present all the 100 military who acted between September 2006- April 2007 in Basra within the Multinational Division South East together with their British partners.

State Secretary Corneliu Dobritoiu thanked to the military in the name of the Minister of Defense Teodor Melescanu and appreciated the Mountain Troops as the ambassadors of Romania in a different cultural environment.

“You acted in no elegant diplomatic environment. You acted in a hostile environment and managed to promote our message of abnegation and sacrifice for the achievement of the ideals of a people in need, the Iraqi people” said Corneliu Dobritoiu.

The activity of the Mountain Troops within the UNAMI in Iraq must be seen as a very special experience that could positively mark the future of all of those who chooses for a military career, said the State Secretary.

The first Romanian Sub-unit for UNAMI support entered the Iraqi theater of operations at the UN‘s request. During its mandate, the Romanian Sub – unit was manned with military of the 26th Infantry Battalion “Neagoe Basarab” from Craiova, the 33rd Mountain Battalion from Curtea de Arges and the 21st Mountain Battalion from Predeal. The return of the military of the Battalion from Predeal we practically end the mission fulfilled within the UN Force of Protection of the Assistance Mission in Iraq – UNAMI. The Romanian military mainly developed the missions of security of Basra UNAMI HQ, organization of check points for persons and vehicles and escort of the UN personnel.
