Press release No. 186 05.06.2007
STATEMENT

Regarding the statement for the AFP Agency, granted Monday, June 4, occasioned by the participation in the 53rd Plenary Session of the UEO Parliamentary Assembly, the Minister of Defense, Teodor Melescanu makes the following statement:

In the context of a statement on the fact that the facilities set at the USA disposal by Romania and Bulgaria could affect the obligations the two countries assumed within the Treaty on conventional armed forces in Europe, I made the statement that, during the official visit in Bulgaria, we agreed with our Bulgarian partners on a common point of view to clarify all the issues on these facilities.
Our point of view was that these facilities do not affect the security of the Russian Federation, on the contrary, they are contributing in stability and security of the entire area.
The document on the common Romanian and Bulgarian position on this issue will be worked out by the experts from the Ministries of Defense from the two states.
We never made the proposition on common exercises with Bulgarian, Russian and US troops, simply because I can not make any propositions in the name of Bulgaria, the United States and even Romania.
But I mentioned that, in our opinion, the development of common exercises and participation in actions within the Partnership for Peace together with the armed forces from Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia and other countries from the Black Sea region could be a good opportunity to prove as groundless the possible problems on the facilities set at the US disposal by Romania and Bulgaria.
These type of actions, in our opinion, could be an excellent opportunity for dialogue at military and political level, with contribution in the increase of trust and security in the Black Sea region.
