MoD leaders on visit to the Romanian military in Afghanistan

Defense Minister, Teodor Melescanu and chief of the General Staff, Admiral Ph.D. Gheorghe Marin met the Romanian military deployed in the theaters of operations in Afghanistan, during their working visit in the region, on December 2 and 4, 2007.

The leaders of the Ministry of Defense congratulated and wished them success for the National Day of Romania. The Romanian military presented the events they organized for December 1st, to celebrate the National Day and reported to the MoD leaders the problems they are confronting with in the theater of operations.

During the first stage of the visit in Kabul, Minister Melescanu had a bilateral meeting with his Afghani counterpart, Abdul Rahim Warrdak. At the end of the visit the conclusion was that the Romanian military will intensify in 2008 the missions of training and forming of the Afghani armed forces so that the authorities of the region could step by step take the responsibility of the process of security.

The Afghani Defense Minister thanked in this context for the efforts the Romanians made in Afghanistan, especially in humanitarian missions and showed the interest in the possibility to form the Afghani officers in military education institutions in Romania.


The Defense Minister and the chief of the General Staff visited in Kabul and Kandahar the Romanian military participating in Enduring Freedom operation, and those participating in ISAF.

The delegation will also meet the other Romanian military acting in the theater of operations in Afghanistan, in the other two missions.
