Teodor Melescanu at the Defence Ministers Informal Meeting

The Romanian Defence Minister Teodor Melescanu attended the EU member states' Defence Ministers Informal Meeting, held on February 22, in Brdo, Slovakia.
The need to increase the EU reaction capability to meet the current security and defence issues was a key topic during the meeting.
With regard to the operational deficit (mainly airlift, helicopters), the defence ministers stressed the importance of generating capabilities complementary to NATO, including their joint financing.
Most of the participants highlighted the crucial role of the European Defence Agency (EDA) in developing joint capability projects.
Another topic discussed was the need to improve the complementarity with other international organizations (UNO, OSCE), in order to capitalize on the unique package of instruments the EU can offer.
Minister Melescanu raffirmed Romania's constant support for a sustainable security framework in the Balkans, the national commitment for the EU battle groups, as well as the need for an increased communitary political endorsement for developing capabilities complementary to NATO.
The State Secretary and Chief of the Department of Defence Policy and Planning, Corneliu Dobritoiu and the Deputy Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant General Mihail Orzeata also attended the event..
