Tuesday, December 2, 2003 minister of National Defense Ioan Mircea Pascu participated to NATO-Ukraine Commission works and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council developed in Brussels.
The Commission evaluated the achievements in implementing the goals of the Armed Forces reform and the sector of security of NATO-Ukraine Action Plan for 2004. The Defense ministers appreciated the important achievements of this state in restructuring and developing the civilian control over the Armed Forces.
Mr. Ioan Mircea Pascu specified that Romania is supporting Ukraine for joining NATO and re-affirmed the disposability in supporting it due the experience the Romanian Ministry of National Defense lessons learned in fulfilling the goals of the Armed Forces reform. The Romanian official also presented the positive framework of military cooperation and assistance between Romania and Ukraine.
Within the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council the Defense ministers of NATO member and invited and partner states discussed on the increase of cooperation under PfP aegis by the partners implication in actions for increasing regional stability and counter-terrorism fight including the participation to NATO led operations.
The Romanian minister of National Defense underlined the essential role the Partnership had for the preparations of the seven states invited to join NATO and the necessity to develop certain future specific programs as a response to the partners specific requests. Mr. Ioan Mircea Pascu reaffirmed the support for Serbia and Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina join to the Partnership for Peace.
The Council approached the partner states real modalities for connecting to the Alliance’s process of transformation and the initiatives launched during the Prague Summit. The discussions in Defense ministers format will represent the base for the Partnership adaptation during the Istanbul Summit.
