During the visit in the United States of America, State Secretary George Cristian Maior met Wednesday, March 10, 04 in Washington DC with Democrat Senator Ben Nelson.
During their talks the Senator Nelson congratulated Romania for the progresses done in the process of transition and reform of the Armed Forces and stressed on the importance of “the new friends and allies” for the USA. In the same time the Senator appreciated the commitment of the Romanian authorities for the active implication in the process of peace, stabilization and reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the same time he expressed the US firm support in strengthening the bilateral security cooperation.
State Secretary George Cristian Maior thanked for the support granted to Romania for the acceleration of the reforms in security domain.
Ben Nelson stressed that “the new allies fought in the last fifty years for the same values as the fathers of the American nation” and appreciated that “the Baltic countries and Romania have an important role to play in the transfer of the experience to the new democracies from the Eastern Europe and Caucasus”.
At the end of the meeting Senator Nelson reaffirmed the support granted to Romania and stressed the importance of the Black Sea region in the present environment of security fo r stability and security for Central Asia and Enlarged Middle East.
The Democrat Senator Ben Nelson is member of the Senatorial Committee for Armed Forces and is the supporter of the enlargement of NATO and Romania’s integration within the North Atlantic Alliance”.
