The Minister of National Defence, Gabriel Oprea, and representatives of the MoND leadership attended the annual report on 2009 of the Armaments Department, on Thursday, February 25.
The deputy chief of the Armaments Department, Brigade General Eng. Catalin-Adrian Moraru presented the achievements of the Department in its area of responsibility, the programmes of defence procurement and acquisition contracts for weapon systems and equipment, the use of allotted resources, the coordination of research-development activity and the technical higher education, the way quality and requirements for metrology and technical standardization were met and the specific control for the imports and exports of military products.
Minister Gabriel Oprea said he considered the activity of the Department as satisfactory. He further said that the department is faced with a complex and difficult mission, in the present context, namely to reach the always growing standards, ton ensure the interoperability and compatibility with allies and partners, at home and in the theaters of operations, to keep updated on the rapid progress of technology at international level. Speaking of the economic-financial crisis we are faced with, the Minister emphasized the need to prioritize certain objectives moreover, to identify that appropriate means and tools that should sustain an effective use of the defence resources the allotted state budget.
\'We are primarily concerned with running the procurement programmes vital for sustaining equipment for the troops in the theaters of operations, for the combat actions for our soldiers’ security and protection in carrying out their missions\' stated the National Defence Minister.
The national interest is a priority for the Armaments Department and for the Ministry of National Defence, and the best equipment is of high importance for our combat troops in accomplishing their missions, having in view the interoperability and high compatibility with our allies and partners, stated Mister Gabriel Oprea.
Reviewing the coordination of defence procurement policies, Gabriel Oprea stressed out the need to continue the process of restructuring, modernizing and going private of the defence industry with the assistance of specialists of the department; he also highlighted the need to harmonize the legal framework in the area with that from the EU and NATO; cooperation with NATO agencies and foreign companies should be improved by promoting certain products for exporting.
The National Defence Minister assured the audience of his support in achieving the projects and expressed his conviction that the professionals of the department will take care that the Armaments Department, with an important role in maintaining and increasing the capabilities of the armed forces, will continue to sustain its efforts and a job well done.
