The Chief of US Naval Operations Visits Romania

The State Secretary for Defence Policy and Planning, Valeriu Nicut, and the chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Stefan Danila, met recently with Admiral Jonathan W. Greenert, US Chief of Naval Operations, at the military base in Deveselu.

The three officials talked with the Romanian and American personnel and were briefed on the stage of rendering operational the Deveselu military facility.

State Secretary Valeriu Nicut said after the visit that both Romania and the US have so far met the deadlines agreed upon related to rendering the Deveselu missile defence facility operational, as stipulated by the common program of activities.

The US official pointed out that rendering the base operational in 2015 will make it an important component of the NATO missile defence system. Admiral Greenert also highlighted the special part played by of the nearly 200 American troops, civilian personnel and contractors in the smooth operation of the facility alongside their Romanian allies.

During his visit in Romania, Admiral Greenert also met with the chief of Navy Staff, Rear Admiral Alexandru Mirsu and visited Regele Ferdinand frigate and Mircea training ship. The meeting agenda also included talks on the latest developments in naval cooperation, joint participation in NATO operations as well as future action guidelines to increase stability in the Black Sea area.
