Meetings of the European Defence Agency Steering Board and the Foreign Affairs Council in Defence Ministers Format

A delegation of the Ministry of National Defence headed by the State Secretary for Defence Policy and Planning, Valeriu Nicut, participated in the meetings of EDA Steering Board and the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) in Brussels, on Tuesday, November 17.

In her opening speech, Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy condemned the terrorist attacks conducted on 13 November 2015 in Paris, whereas the French defence minister, Jean Yves Le Drian requsted assistance, invoking the provisions of Art. 42.7 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty on the mutual defence clause.

The talks during the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council focused on EU's Commission Defence Action Plan and the need to build defence capabilities in support of security and development. They also discussed topics related to ongoing operations and missions under the Common Security and Defence Policy aegis. The talks held within the Foreign Affairs Council were attended by Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General.

During the meeting of EDA Steering Board, they discussed the agency's budget on 2016, the tri-annual framework for 2016-2018 and the stage ofn implementing EDA's priority tasks and future steps related to capability development.
