The Heroes's Cross Monument on Caraiman Mountain is now in the administration of the Ministry of National Defence.

The protocol and the document based on which the monument passed from under the administration of the town of Busteni into public administration and the management of the Ministry of National Defence were signed on Monday, March 14.

The handover is motivated by the need to rehabilitate the monument by the Ministry of National Defence, as it is a landmark of national unity, that was built in memory of the Romanian soldiers who fell during the first world conflagration.

The sacrifice of the Romanian people during the world's first large conflagration of the 20th century counted about 985,000 people who died on the battlefield, behind the front, in hospitals, from among the injured and ill people and from the territories occupied by the Central Powers. To this number 75,491 others added, from among war invalids and injured people.

As a token of respect for the ultimate sacrifice of the people who died during the war for the country's unification, the Ministry of National Defence works to finish the restauration of the monument by the 100th anniversary of the Great Union.

The Heroes' Cross is a monument built between 1926 and 1928 in Caraiman Mountains at 2291 meters altitude, in memory of the heroes of WW1. The monument was inaugurated and blessed on September 14, 1928.

The cross is 28 metres high and has two arms of 7 metres each. The cross is made of steel profiles and is mounted on a pedestal of concrete clad with stone 7.5 metres high. Inside the pedestal there is a room that originally housed the electric generator that powered the 120 light bulbs of 500 W each located on the perimeter of the cross.
