Defence Minister's Meeting with the Ambassador of Canada to Bucharest

On March 29, the Minister of National Defence, Mihnea Motoc, received H.E. Joanne Lemay, the Ambassador of Canada to Bucharest.

Both parties agreed on the need to continue and intensify bilateral defence cooperation in the present regional and international security context, characterized by highly complex and challenging developments.

The Romanian defence minister expressed his appreciation for the solidarity and firm commitment of Canada in implementing assurance measures for the allies on the Eastern flank and mentioned the strong involvement of the Canadian military forces into the exercises conducted in Romania and in the Black Sea region, represented by the three military services. He made a special note of the deployment of the Canadian air detachments with CF-18 Hornet aircraft in Romania, at Campia Turzii, in 2014, and also at Mihail Kogalniceanu this year.

The two officials also mentioned the progress registered in the Technical Agreement between the Ministry of National Defence of Romania and the Department of Defence of Canada on conducting exercises, training sessions and ensuring the support of the Host Nation.

As far as the NATO Summit in Warsaw is concerned, the two parties stressed their common interest in the long-term adaptation of the Alliance, with focus on a more efficient deterrence and defence posture, based on a robust allied presence on the eastern flank of NATO.
