Meeting of the Romanian and Turkish Defence Ministers

The Minister of National Defence, Mihnea Motoc, had a bilateral meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Fikri Isik, during NATO Defence Ministerial.

The two officials agreed on intensifying Romanian-Turkish military cooperation, in agreement with the general development of bilateral relations as stipulated the Strategic Partnership signed by the two countries. The main fields taken into account are exercises and common training, mutual support and concrete contributions to rendering operational the allied command and control structures in the two countries as well as cooperation in the field of defence industry.

The talks focused on the importance of increasing the strategic profile of the Black Sea profile on the allied agenda, in the context of the future Summit in Warsaw.

They also discussed ways of coordinating bilateral efforts to ensure the consolidation of an allied forward position on NATO Eastern flank, especially at the Black Sea. The two ministers decided the intensification, in the time left until the Summit, of bilateral contacts meant to complete the regional package for ensuring a forward allied presence in the area, especially in the maritime field.
