Romanian Defence Minister’s Meeting with his Slovak Counterpart

The Minister of National Defence, Mihnea Motoc, participated in the activities dedicated to the anniversary of 72 years since the beginning of the Slovak National Insurrection and had bilateral talks with his Slovak counterpart, as part of his official visit in the Slovak Republic, made on Monday, August 29th.

Minister Motoc took part in the ceremony held at the Museum of the Slovak National Insurrection from Banská Bystrica, in the presence of the President of Slovakia, Andrej Kiska, the Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, the Slovak Defence Minister, Peter Gajdoš and of the war veterans. The visit’s agenda also included an official visit to Zvolen, the biggest Romanian military cemetery located outside the national borders, in order to attend a commemoration ceremony of the Romanian heroes.

Topics such as future defence cooperation relations both at bilateral level and within NATO and EU were approached during the talks with the Slovak counterpart. Defence Minister, Mihnea Motoc, emphasized the importance of the implementation of the decisions taken at the NATO Summit in Warsaw with a view of consolidating the Alliance’s deterrence and defence posture in response to the new types of risks and threats against the security of the Euro-Atlantic space.

Since Slovakia took over the baton of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Minister Motoc reiterated Romania’s support for the priorities of the common security and defence policy. Also, efficient ways for an active participation in the efforts made to increase EU’s strategic profile in the global security environment were analyzed.
