On March 29, 2004, Romania officially joined NATO, by depositing the ratification instruments at the State Department of the USA, the depositary state of the North-Atlantic Treaty. On April 2, 2004, a ceremony was organized to mark the official hoisting of the Romanian flag at NATO HQ.

After joining NATO, the Romanian Armed Forces started an ample process of transformation and modernization. At present, over 650 Romanian troops are deployed in two major NATO operations, KFOR in Kosovo and Resolute Support in Afghanistan.

Over the last years, significant results were obtained in implementing the decisions made at NATO Summit in Wales in 2014 and the one in Warsaw in 2016, namely the measures to implement the Readiness Action Plan, after the illegal annexation of Crimeea by the Russian Federation.

Two allied commands established on the national territory conduct activities meant to enhance the defence and deterrence posture of the Alliance in the region, namely the fully operational NFIU and MND SE HQ, whose full operational capacity will be reached this year.

Also this year, the Multinational Brigade MN BDE, established on the structure of the 2nd Infantry Brigade Rovine in Craiova, will be rendered operational, in the context of developing and consolidating the key elements of a tailored forward presence on the southern segment of the eastern flank of the Alliance.

Romania deploys an air-defence detachment to Poland, consisting in an OERLIKON-type battery, for the consolidation of the enhanced allied presence on the northern segment of the eastern flank.

Also, last year the allied anti-missile defence system at Deveselu was rendered operational.
