Saber Guardian 2017, the largest Multinational Exercise in the Black Sea Region

About 25,000 service members from 22 allied and partner nations will take part in the U.S. Army Europe-led (USAREUR) multinational exercise Saber Guardian 2017 (SG17) that will take place in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, over July 11 to 20, 2017.

Saber Guardian is a military exercise conducted annually. SG 17 is the largest one so far, in terms of the number of participants and goals, intended to enhance joint and combined interoperability across a variety of mission, with the rapid mobilization and concentration of forces wherever and whenever across Europe.

The massive redeployment of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and the move of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment from Vilseck across the European theater to exercise locations in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania are some of the main actions of the exercise. Moreover, SG17 will also include live fire exercise, several field training and live fire exercises, multiple river crossings, medevac and treatment of the wounded.

Enabling events will take place in the days prior to and following the exercise. Many smaller U.S. and European-national exercises in the Black Sea region this summer will enable SG17 objectives. The combination of all these exercises allows execution of the full range of military missions supporting security and stability in the Black Sea region, thus contributing to enhancing the deterrence posture.
