Defence Minister's Meeting with the Ambassador of Germany to Bucharest

The Minister of National Defence, Adrian THutuianu, received the Ambassador of Germany to Bucharest, Cord Meier-Klodt, at the defence ministry, on Thursday, August 24.

Present at the discussions were also the chief of General Staff, General Nicolae Ciuca, and the State Secretary for Armament, Florin-Lazar Vladica.

The officials discussed the perspectives of enhancing bilateral cooperation on defence, also within NATO and the EU.

Minister THutuianu pointed out the landmarks of the bilateral cooperation and emphasized that Romania stays strongly engaged in implementing the decisions of NATO Summit in Warsaw. In this context, he mentioned the steps to accomplish NATO forward presence in the region and thanked the German side for the support offered to Romania in implementing its own initiatives.

As to the Common Security and Defence Policy, the national positions were highlighted on implementing the conclusions of the European Council of December 2016 on security and defence. They focused on the current themes under debate at the level of the European Council on the background of implementing the Global Strategy as well as the cooperation of the two countries with a view to preparing for the taking over the Presidency of the EU Council by Romania early in 2019.

As a conclusion, the Romanian defence minister emphasized the interest in furthering technical and military cooperation with the German partner, by identifying and conducting specific programs meant to stimulate German investments and technology transfer to romania.

The German ambassador emphasized the importance of enhancing Romanian-German defence cooperation as a strong pillar of the European and Transatlantic security system. The ambassador was keen on thanking minister THutuianu for the interest shown for the concrete projects of cooperation with Germany and reiterated that they aim at achieving a long-term partnership in production and creating work places for highly qualified personnel in Romania.
