Defence Minister's Meeting with his Canadian Counterpart

As part of the official visit of the Minister of National Defence, Mihai Fifor, in Canada, over September 22 to 24, occasioned by Invictus Games Toronto 2017, the Romanian official had a bilateral meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Harjit Singh Sajjan.

The two officials discussed the upward trend of bilateral relations, where defence cooperation has developed, Canada being an active supporter of the initiatives promoted by Romania in NATO.

Minister Fifor thanked his Canadian counterpart for inviting the Romanian troops to the Invictus Games and "for the opportunity to share the same values, not just in theaters of operations but also in the sports grounds".

The Romanian minister appreciated the support Romania received from Canada during NATO joint air police missions and for the participation of the Canadian troops in the Southeast Multinational Division Command and the Multinational Brigade, in NATO Force Integration Unit, as well as in the multinational exercises carried out on the Romanian territory and in the Black Sea region.

Minister Fifor also highlighted Canada's significant contribution to implementing the decisions made at NATO Summit in Warsaw, designed to ensure a deterrence and defence posture on the eastern flank of the alliance.

The two officials stressed the importance of strengthening interoperability at NATO level and enhancing military cooperation by continuing training exercises in bilateral and multinational format.

Moreover, the Romanian minister appreciated the efforts of the Canadian authorities to organize the Invictus Games, a competition under way in Toronto, in which Romania participates with 15 athletes.
