Vererans Day was established by Law No. 150/ 2014 for the acknowledgement of the merits of servicemen who participated in military actions and for granting them and their families or followers their rights.

Veterans Day was chosen for its symbolism the Armistice Day of November 11th 1918 between Allied Forces and Germany, when WWI ended and the conditions were created for the Great Union in our country, on December 1st 1918.

For the Romanian military, the significance of this day is related to the fact that on November 11th 2003 2nd Lieutenant (post-humous) Iosif Silviu Fogorasi died in the field becoming the first Romanian soldier to die in the theater of operations in Afghanistan.

Between 1996 and 2017, Romania lost 29 soldiers in missions carried out in theaters of operations, whereas more than 180 were injured.

About 40,000 troops manned the detachments deployed ton Afghanistan, Iraq and the Western Balkans, or in other missions in Africa or Europe.
