The meeting of the Defence Minister with the Chief of the Helenic National Defence General Staff

On Thursday, December 14th, the minister of national defence, Mihai Fifor, had a meeting with the Chief of the Helenic National Defence General Staff, Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis, at the MoND headquarters. The meeting was also attended by the Romanian Chief of Defence, General Nicolae Ciuca.

The meeting agenda included topics related to the cooperation in the field of defence, both at bilateral level and within EU and NATO, with focus on identifying ways of enhancing military relations for the benefit of both states.

Also, the Romanian and Greek officials expressed their common interests in developing a Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) in the field of security and defence, as signatory states of the Notification with regard to their participation in PESCO.

In allied context, the two officials agreed upon the cooperation between the armed forces of Romania and with a view of increasing interoperability and of coordinating on common interest topics listed on NATO's agenda.

On this occasion, minister Mihai Fifor emphasized the fact that, by allocating 2% of the GDP for defence expenditures, Romania joins the other allied states that honor this commitment. At the same time, the defence minister pointed out the importance of continuing NATO's efforts in countering all threats posed to the entire Alliance and projecting stability, by means of a 360 degrees type. With respect to the Allied efforts made on the Eastern Flank, minister Fifor informed the Chief of the Helenic National Defence General Staff on the progress made in implementing the decisions made on NATO's defence and deterrence posture, assumed at the Warsaw Summit.
