The Romanian Defence Minister met with his Canadian counterpart

On Friday, November 9th, the Romanian Defence Minister Mihai Fifor met with his Canadian counterpart, Harjit Singh Sajjan, who was on official visit to Romania.

The two officials visited the 57th Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, where they met with the Canadian Detachment deployed in the base to conduct enhanced Air Policing missions together with the Romanian Air Force personnel.

The subjects listed on the meeting agenda were the status of the bilateral cooperation in the field of defence, current topics of the North-Atlantic Alliance and UNO, the security situation in the Black Sea region and the implementation of the Allied reassurance measures and Allied presence in this area.

The Romanian defence minister thanked his counterpart for Canada's constant and solid commitment by emphasizing the importance of the current participation in the enhanced Air Policing missions conducted on our territory and the professionalism they proved by the Royal Air Force pilots. At the same time, Mihai Fifor expressed his appreciation for the Canadian staff officers' activity who man certain positions within the Allied structures established on Romanian territory: Headquarters Multinational Division South-Eastern and Headquarters Multinational Brigade South-Eastern from Craiova.

The Romanian and Canadian defence ministers emphasized the collaboration between the two states within the UNO missions and agreed upon the initiation of talks at expert-group level in the near future in order to enhance relations in this field.

During the meeting, the two officials tackled the increase of bilateral cooperation in the fields of the military education and medicine. Minister Fifor mainly focused on the cooperation with the Canadian counterpart with regard to the post-traumatic treatment for the soldiers who returned from the theaters of operations as well as on the improvement of the research, risk management, diagnose and specific treatment system of the post-traumatic stress affections. The Canadian defence minister was very open in this respect, taking into consideration the large experience gained by his country in this field.
