Reunion of the Romanian-American Joint Committee, at Bucharest

On Wednesday, April 24, at the National Military Palace, the Department for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations organized the Reunion of the Romanian-American Joint Committee for the implementation of the |Agreement between Romania and the United States of America on the activities of the US forces stationed on Romanian territory '', signed in Bucharest, on December 6, 2005, and the ,Agreement between Romania and the United States of America on the emplacement of the US ballistic missile defence system in Romania'', signed at Washington on September 13 2011.

The Romanian delegation was headed by the State Secretary for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations, Nicolae Nasta, and was made up of experts and personnel of the MoND and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The US delegation was headed by Major General David Julazadeh, Director for Plans, Policies, Strategies and Capabilities at the United States European Command (US EUCOM), and was made up of experts and invitees from the Unites Stated Army Europe (USAREUR), United States Air Force Europe (USAFE), Naval Forces Command (NAVEUR), as well as from the US Embassy in Bucharest.

The members of the delegations had discussions on the calendar of bilateral and multinational exercises, including the NATO ones, that are scheduled to be conducted throughout 2019 and 2020 on Romanian territory, the investment projects developed by the USA and the national funded ones, in the previously agreed facilities and areas, as well as on other practical aspects in support of the implementation of the provisions of the Romanian-US bilateral agreements managed by the Romanian-American Joint Committee.

On this occasion, the Romanian delegation thanked its strategic partner for its significant contribution consisting in troops and equipment within the scheduled exercises and reiterated the availability to provide the host nation support and ensure the force protection measures during the conduct of exercises.

The subject of the investment projects developed by the US and the national funded ones was another topic on the talks agenda, taking into consideration the fact that the air bases from Mihail Kogalniceanu and Campia Turzii will be extended. Both our country and the US partner will allocate important sums in this respect.

As part of the reunion, the participants approached subjects regarding the current security challenges emerging in the Black Sea region and military mobility, emphasizing, on one hand, the need to continue consolidating the strategic partnership with the USA in the field of defence , both in bilateral format and within the North-Atlantic Alliance, and on the other hand, the need to upgrade the transportation equipment to the military mobility requirements, concomitantly with the facilitation of the diplomatic and bureaucratic procedures for the increase of the armed forces' deployment capability, in accordance with the commitments assumed by Romania within the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) of the European Union.
