First Day of the Meetings of NATO Defence Ministers

On Thursday, 24 October, the first day of the Meetings of NATO Defence Ministers from Brussels started with a working session dedicated to the Allied operations and missions.

The debates focused on Resolute Support Mission from Afghanistan, the NATO Training Mission from Iraq and KFOR Operation. Also, the status of the implementation of the NATO Readiness Initiative and the Allied force generation process were analyzed.

State Secretary for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations, Doru-Claudian Frunzulica, pointed out the importance given by Romania to the Allied operations, missions and activities, which places it among the first five top contributors to RSM from Afghanistan.

Also, the state secretary emphasized the importance of ensuring the Allied contribution to the full implementation of NATO Readiness Initiative. Romania presented its commitment with respect to this initiative, as part of the equitable burden sharing principle within Allied framework.

The last series of consultations, which took place in a working dinner format, with the participation of the EU, Sweden and Finland representatives focused on countering of hybrid threats and resilience. The officials analyzed the progress made by the Alliance in countering the hybrid threats and the additional measures that can be assumed both at national level and at the level of the organization in order to consolidate resilience. The debates focused on the challenges posed by the 5G technologies, from the perspective of the resilience and cybernetic defence.

The Romanian official pointed out the importance given by the national authorities and NATO to the threats posed by the hybrid field and the reciprocal support relation between the civilian and military sectors.
