Bilateral meeting of the defence minister with his Canadian counterpart

Defence Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciuca had a meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Harjit Sajjan, as part of the Meeting of NATO Defence Ministers, which takes place at Brussels, over 12-13 February. During the meeting, the officials approached a series of topics related to the defence cooperation both at bilateral and multilateral levels and within NATO.

The Romanian defence minister made an assessment of the security situation from the Black Sea region, expressing the concerns of the Romanian authorities with regard to their impact on NATO security. At the same time, he referred to the status of the implementation of the measures adjacent to the tFP, developed in response to the threats from the region and meant to consolidate the defence and deterrence posture on the Allied Eastern flank. In this context, the Romanian dignitary expressed his appreciation for the constant support offered by Canada in the air, naval and ground fields in the implementation of the tFP measures.

In this context, the Romanian minister appreciated the constant support offered by Canada in the implementation of the tFP measures meant to consolidate the Eastern flank.

At the same time, minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciuca gave the example of Canada's participation in the enhanced Air Policing Missions conducted at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, the Canadian Air Force contingent being scheduled to take part in the fourth such mission in Romania. The Romanian defence minister emphasized the importance of continuing conducting this mission in order to ensure the integrity of the national, and, implicitly, Allied air space.

Another important subject on the meeting agenda was the cooperation within the UNO, Romania assuming to contribute to MINUSMA Mission from Mali, starting October 2019. In this context, the Romanian defence minister highlighted the support offered by Canada before the pre-deployment stage and taking over the mission.
