The Anniversary of 9th May

Romania's National Flag and the European Union One were hoisted on Saturday, 9th May, at the MoND Headquarters, during a ceremony organized on the occasion of the anniversary of Romania's State Independence Day, the Victory Day of the United Nations' Coalition in the WWII and the European Union Day.

Considering the current epidemiological context and the Romanian Armed Forces' missions in order to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection, this day with triple significance for the history of the Romanian people will always be marked under the motto Always on duty!.

In his message, Defence Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciuca emphasized that today, 9th May 2020, we recall three historical data: Romania's Independence Day, end of WWII and Europe's Day.. But, most of the Romanians would have not had the chance to trustfully and hopefully look into the future without the heroes of these days, without the Romanian physicians and adjacent medical personnel, both military and civilian, without the dedication of these true soldiers!

Germany's unconditional capitulation act was signed at 9th May 1945, at the Soviet General Headquarters from Berlin which marked the end of the biggest and bloody world conflagration from all times.

Since the declaration of the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, as of 9th May 1950, considered the milestone of the European Union, the European countries have focused their energies on a new form of political cooperation meant to prevent the possibility of a new war breaking out among the European nations. A year later, the Paris Treaty was signed, which stipulated the creation of such a body, the European Community of Charcoal and Steel, which afterwards became a part of the European.

9 th May also has a third significance for Romania, this being the day when, in 1877, Mihail Kogalniceanu was reading in the plenary of the Deputies Gathering the Declaration of the Independence of Romania, at which marked the final inclusion of our country on Europe's Chart. Romania's Indepenence was going to be gained in the following months by the Armed Forces in the battlefields from Grivita, Smardan and other strongholds obtained with blood and sacrifices.
