Simona Maierean - the first woman pilot assigned aircraft commander within Heavy Airlift Wing from Europe

Lieutenant Commander Simona Maierean, pilot on C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, within Strategic Aircraft Capability SAC, from Papa Air Base, Hungary, became the first woman in Europe who was certified aircraft commander within this Capability.

At the age of 24, Lieutenant Commander Maierean wrote history within the Romanian Air Force, being the first woman fighter pilot in Romania, at the age of 33 becoming copilot on C-17 Globemaster aircraft within the Strategic Aircraft Capability, Papa Air Base, Hungary.

Two months ago, she piloted a C-17 Globemaster and, after a 40 flight-hour mission, she brought 100,000 protection overall suits into the country from South Korea.

Lieutenant Commander Simona Maierean graduated Henri Coanda Air Force Academy in 2007, got her military pilot license in 2008 Aurel Vlaicu School of Application, Boboc and was assigned at 86th Fetesti Air Base.

In 2012 she decided to make the transition to the airlift aircraft and became pilot C 27 J Spartan aircraft at 90th Otopeni Air Base. Starting 2017, Simona has been part of the Heavy Airlift Wing of the Strategic Aircraft Capability.
