The Chief of Defence Staff at the Reunion of the European Union Military Committee

The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu, participated in the Reunion of the EU Military Committee (EUMC) in the chiefs of Defence format, over 8-9 July, from Brussels.

The EU chiefs of Defence evaluated EU's resilience proved in the actions meant to limit the spread of COVID-19. The lessons learned in this process emphasized the need to have an efficient command & control and support structure for EU, based on an adequate communications and IT system. The migration flow was also one of the topics of discussion listed on the reunion agenda. The anticipation of the migration phenomenon and knowing the routes used by the migrant flows towards Europe improve the crisis response mechanisms of the European Union. Also, the chiefs of Defence established that the involvement of other international organizations, especially UNO and the African Union in order to ensure security on the African continent increase the level of accomplishment of the EU military training missions from the Central African Republic, Mali and Somalia.

Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu emphasized the importance of correlating the development of a strategic orientation instrument with the strategies which define the functioning principles of the EU but also with NATO's strategic orientation. Also, he said that the main line of effort in the field of EU-NATO cooperation lies in the strengthening of the EU's defence and security capabilities, in close connection with the similar processes within the Organization of the North-Atlantic Treaty.
