The participation of the Chief of Defence Staff in NATO Military Committee Conference

The Chief of Defence Staff , Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu, participated in the Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session , conducted in the videoconference format, on Friday, 18th September.

The working sessions of the reunion were initiated by the Chairman of the Military Committee, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, together with the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Tod Wolters, and the Commander of the Allied Command Transformation (ACT), General Andre Lanata. During the conference, the allocutions of the chiefs of defence focused on NATO's activities, missions and operations, especially Resolute Support Mission from Afghanistan, the Iraqi NATO Mission Euro-Atlantic deterrence and defence posture, concept NATO's Warfighting Capstone and NATIO's response in order to limit the spread of COVID-19 pandemics. Also, NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, had a discussion session with the representatives of NATO's Military Committee.

Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu emphasized the importance of focusing the Alliance efforts on the implementation of the reassurance measures by consolidating the tailored Forward presence. In this respect, the Black Sea Region, part of the entire Eastern Flank, requires a coherent defensive approach, including by increasing Allied capabilities in the area. Also, the chief of Defence Staff mentioned that the implementation of the NATO Response Plan to the Pandemics through the building of the medical material and equipment stocks and synchronizing civil-military reaction mechanisms will lead to an enhanced resilience of the states to the evolution of the pandemics. Not least, Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu highlighted that an effective Allied strategic communication and cooperation in this field with the European Union will help combat the disinformation campaigns led on the territories of the NATO member states.

The Military Committee is NATO's highest military authority. The members of the NATO's military command structure get together twice a year to discuss NATO's missions and to offer the North-Atlantic Council military counseling based on consensus on the way the Alliance can effectively counteract global security challenges.
