The Chief of Defence Staff, in the European Union Military Committee Videoconference

The chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu, participated in the European Union Military Committee Videoconference, in the Chiefs of Defence format, on Thursday, November 5th.

The reunion was chaired by the EUMC Chairman, General Claudio Graziano, and attended by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

During the talks, the chiefs of defence presented their own assessments with regard to the finalization of EU's Strategic Compass. In this context, the officials identified options to consolidate the correlation between the development of military capabilities and operational environment, including by rendering profitable the lessons learned during the on-going operations and missions.

Also, topics referring to the evolution, roles and future missions of the EUMS military structures (European Union Military Staff ) and MPCC (Military Planning Conduct Capability), as well as the cooperation between the EU and the North-Atlantic Alliance. During the meeting, Josep Borrell presented recent evolutions from the security policy ad common defence field.

Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu emphasized the fact that rendering the MPCC operational will lead to a flexible command and control system, able to answer in an efficient manner to the current security crises. At the same time, the Romanian official appreciated the steps taken in the process of implementing EU's defence initiatives and highlighted the importance of the mobility mobility at EU's level and the need to adequately fund it.

When referring to the cooperation between NATO and EU, the chief of Defence Staff emphasized the significance of NATO to Europe, all the more the North-Atlantic Alliance represents the collective defence pillar for most of the EU states. The main line of action is the strengthening of the defence and security capacities of EU, tightly connected with similar processes within the Alliance, Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu stated.

In the EUMC sessions, the EU chiefs of Defence discuss the military assessments prepared by the EUMS, present points of views and harmonize national perspectives, suggesting courses of action in the field of European common security and defence .
