Operation NATO Mission Iraq was established by NATO in October 2018, following the request of the Iraqi Government. It's a counseling, training and consolidating mission of the host state capabilities, conducted by entirely respecting Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity. By means of this mission, NATO helps consolidating the security structures and military educational institutions, so that the Iraqi forces should be able to prevent the return of the ISIS/Daesh terrorist networks.

Operation Inherent Resolve was initiated in 2014, following the deterioration of the Iraqi security situation. The taking over of the Iraqi cities of Mosul and Tikrit under the ISIS terrorist control led to the intervention of the American forces in support of the Iraqi ones which had been fighting against the ISIS. Currently, the operation is a military component of the Global Coalition Against Daesh made up with representatives of 77 states and 5 international organizations, which act at the request of the Iraqi Government in order to enhance regional security.
