Meeting between State Secretary Simona Cojocaru and the US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategies, Plans and Capabilities

State Secretary for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations, Simona Cojocaru, received the visit of the US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategies, Plans and Capabilities, Dr. Mara Karlin, on Friday, 18 November.

During the bilateral meeting, also attended by the Charge d'Affaires at the US Embassy to Bucharest, David Muniz, the two officials talked about the security situation from the Black Sea region in the context of the latest developments of the aggression war led by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

The dialogue focused on the main elements of the recent US National Defence Strategy and its implications for Europe and the Black Sea region. Also, the bilateral defence cooperation carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Partnership, with focus on the significance of the US forces deployed in Romania, was also discussed. In this context, the officials emphasized Romania's contribution to the regional security and the multi-dimensional support provided to Ukraine.

On the occasion of the US official's visit to Romania, State Secretary Simona Cojocaru accompanied the US guest to Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, where the 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army, is deployed.

During the meeting with the US troops, the Romanian official pointed out the troops' essential role in NATO's defence and deterrence posture on its Eastern flank, and thanked the American Government for its long-term commitment made for strengthening security in our region.

The Romanian official also emphasized the excellent cooperation in the field of joint training, by commending the excellent results of Exercise Justice Sword 22.2, which was conducted at Cincu, this month, with the participation of more than 1,200 soldiers and 400 pieces of equipment.
