Defence Minister’s meeting with the Ambassador of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Bucharest
On Monday, February 5, Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvãr, received the visit of the Ambassador of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Romania, Giles Portman.
The talks were an opportunity to exchange views on the security situation in the Black Sea region, in the context of the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine. The two officials emphasized the importance of continuing providing support to Ukraine, mentioning Romania's participation in the training activities carried out in Great Britain, within Operation Interflex, as well as within EUMAM.
At the same time, the meeting agenda included aspects regarding cooperation within the North Atlantic Alliance, from the perspective of the upcoming Meeting of NATO Defence Ministers, which will take place on February 14 and 15, respectively of the NATO anniversary Summit in Washington.
During the talks, the Minister of National Defence appreciated the Great Britain’s contribution to strengthening the allied position on the eastern flank and especially in the Black Sea region, a proof of allied solidarity and unity. The Romanian official thanked, Great Britain for the announcement regarding the return of the United Kingdom Air Force servicemen to Romania this year, to conduct air policing missions.
Current and future aspects of bilateral cooperation between the two armed forces were also addressed, the success of the Sandown Class Minehunter Program being recalled.
The officials also highlighted that the New Joint Declaration on the Romanian-British Strategic Partnership, from March 2023, offers a new impetus to bilateral defence cooperation.
