Minister of National Defence, Angel Tilvar, had a meeting with the US Ambassador to Romania, Her Excellency Kathleen Kavalec, on Monday, April 15, at the MoND headquarters.

The meeting between the two officials provided the opportunity to address some important topics in the field of defence, such as the current security situation in the Black Sea and Middle East regions, aspects regarding the plans to modernize the 57th Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base and the prospects for bilateral defence cooperation.

Minister of National Defence thanked the American official for the constant dialogue and close coordination, which are paramount in an ever-changing security environment and further strengthen the Strategic Partnership between the two states.

In this context, Minister Tilvar reiterated the importance of the US troops' presence in Romania, which complement NATO's deterrence and defence capabilities, appreciating the professionalism of the American forces. 'These deployments are yet another proof of US solidarity and commitment to the Black Sea region and the continued contribution is fundamental in deterring the actions of the Russian Federation in the region,' minister of national defense stated.

Both officials also concluded that providing continued multidimensional international assistance is critical in supporting Ukraine's defence effort and restoring regional and international order and stability.

At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to continue the dialogue in order to set out common priorities for the July NATO Summit in Washington.
