Atanasiu: The Balkans, an area of strategic importance for Romania

We support the candidacy of your country for participation in the Partnership for Peace and we appreciate that the closeness of the Union of Serbia and Montenegro to NATO represents a decisive step for a new environment of security in the Balkans stated Minister of National Defence, Teodor Atanasiu today in Belgrade.

During the talks with his counterpart Prvoslav Davinic, Atanasiu shared the experience Romania received during the armed forces reform process. Referring to the bilateral military relations, the two officials stressed the fact that they had a constantly improving relationship, evident at the leadership level of the ministries and services.

Atanasiu mentioned that the Balkans represent an important strategic region and our country will continue to be involved at the political and military level in the process of stabilization and democratization of the region.

Today, during the official visit of the Romanian delegation in Belgrade, they signed a protocol between the Ministry of National Defence of Romania and the Ministry of Defence of Serbia and Montenegro on cooperation in education and training of military and civil personnel.
