The 2nd Infantry Battalion ,,Calugareni is back


On August 26, a ceremony took place in honor of the 2nd Infantry Battalion Calugareni return, at the end of its mission Antica Babilonia of Irak.

The ceremony marks the anniversary of ten years since the first Romanian participation in a UN peacekeeping mission.

During February to August 2005 the troops accomplished over 1,300 missions (main road patrol, protection of infrastructure elements-oil pipes, power lines-Camp Mittica guard and civil-military cooperation missions, without engaging.

Trainers from the battalion trained, for the duration of three courses, about 400 Iraqi troops. The Romanian troops finished 17 infrastructure projects with funds from the Multinational Force, estimated at about 1.6 Million USD. The projects consisted of building or modernizing water purifying and filtering stations, sewerage systems, drinking water pipelines and road repair in swamp areas.

The battalion's first participation in an international mission in August 1995, until April 1996, was in UNAVEM III operation, in Angola. At the end of the mission, the unit's flag was awarded the medal In the Service of Peace.
