Press release No. 423 14.09.2005
All Romanian troops in Afghanistan will be under NATO command

'Starting January 1, 2006, the Romanian infantry battalion participating in the Enduring Freedom mission in Afghanistan will be included in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force', stated Defence Minister Teodor Atansiu at the Informal Meeting of NATO Defence Ministers, concluded at Berlin on September 14, 2005.
Mr. Atanasiu also said that most defence ministers favoured a unique command of the two on-going missions in Afghanistan.
Currently, Romania participates in the Enduring Freedom U.S.-led mission, with the 151st Infantry Battalion, deployed close to Kandahar International Airport. Another battalion, the Red Scorpions, is deployed in Kabul under NATO command, between August-October, to assist in the elections in Afghanistan.
