King Ferdinand sets for Active Endeavour

Frigates Marasesti and King Ferdinand are conducting a common training program at the Black Sea during September 16 to 20. The training is part of the evaluation process of the frigate King Ferdinand in preparation of the two months participation in NATO mission Active Endeavour in the Mediterranean.

The two frigates will conduct missions of monitoring commercial traffic and repelling a small boat attack. There will also be a simulation of an air attack, refueling at sea, tow missions and communications.
The main goals of the maneuvers were training of the crews at NATO standards, improving crew cohesion and skills.

On September 12, 2001, NATO implemented the provisions of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, as a consequence of the terrorist attacks against the USA. At the request of the United States, the Alliance decided the deployment in the Mediterranean Sea of STANAVFORMED.
Active Endeavour operation started officially inOctober 2001 when the unit was deployed within the international campaign to counter terrorism.
